FOCUS Engineering, inc. is seeking Construction Observer(s) to join our team.  At FOCUS, you will be part of our City Engineering department team which provides project management and civil engineering support on municipal infrastructure services and projects. Our company offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to assist with the implementation of municipal infrastructure for multiple growing communities in the Twin Cities metro area including the cities of Lake Elmo and Victoria.

Responsibilities include performing field observation for the construction of municipal infrastructure such as sanitary sewer systems, drinking water systems, public streets and storm sewer systems for conformance with project plans and specifications. This position will be responsible for maintaining project records including daily reports, photo documentation, and tracking contractor quantities for payment.  This individual will interact with contractors, city staff and property owners within the construction area to provide information about project timelines and property impacts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two or more years of construction observation or related experience is required.
  • Experience working as a foreman on street and utility construction may be considered.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability and desire to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and able to provide own means of reliable transportation.
  • Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic experience with MS office including Word and Excel or Google Docs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current MnDOT certifications are preferred.

FOCUS Engineering, inc. is seeking a Graduate Engineer to join our team. At FOCUS, you will be part of our City Engineering department team to provide civil engineering support on municipal infrastructure services and projects. Our company offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to gain valuable experience and expertise planning and implementing municipal infrastructure for multiple growing communities in the Twin Cities metro area including the cities of Lake Elmo and Victoria. 

Responsibilities include preparing exhibits, cost estimates, design calculations, feasibility reports, technical memos and specifications along with assistance with contract and construction administration for planning, design and construction of municipal infrastructure including sanitary sewer, drinking water systems, streets and stormwater management.  This position will require significant construction observation of street and utility projects during the construction season. The position will also be responsible for day-to-day tasks for the engineering department such as reviewing right-of-way and grading permits, applications for new development, and tasks associated with meeting NPDES MS4 Permit requirements.   Responding to citizen requests/complaints and following through to bring resolution is an important part of this position. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum of 0-4 years of experience in the Civil Engineering field.
  • EIT Certification or ability to obtain within six months. 
  • Computer skills – Microsoft Xcel, Word, PowerPoint.   
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter who works well independently and as a team. 
  • Valid driver’s license and able to provide own means of reliable transportation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous intern experience with a City or municipal engineering firm.
  • Previous construction observation experience and training with AutoCAD and/or GIS.

FOCUS Engineering, Inc is seeking a summer intern to join our City Engineering department team to provide support on municipal infrastructure services and projects. The position is approximately 3 months in length, with hours of work for the position potentially being 40+ per week, scheduled as projects require. Tasks will be mainly focused on construction observation of public utility installation and street construction, and construction administration (complete daily reports, and review shop drawings, material submittals and record drawings) for either the City of Victoria or the City of Lake Elmo. The position averages 40 hours/week and is a paid position at $22-$25/hour.

We are seeking candidates currently pursuing an engineering degree (preference for civil engineering) who are punctual, have strong time management and organizational skills and are able to communicate effectively with project team members and contractors. Reliable personal transportation is needed for this position.

FOCUS Engineering, inc. is seeking individual(s) with demonstrated experience in construction oversight or construction management of municipal infrastructure to join our City Engineering team. The position includes providing construction oversight, construction management, and engineering support on municipal infrastructure services and projects. Our company offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to manage the construction services and implementation of municipal infrastructure for multiple growing communities in the Twin Cities metro area including the cities of Lake Elmo and Victoria.

The position consists of the oversite of construction of municipal infrastructure including sanitary sewer systems, drinking water systems, public streets and stormwater systems.  Responsibilities include coordination with contractors, testing companies, developers and residents along with oversite of field support staff.  The position is responsible for verifying that new infrastructure is constructed in accordance with approved project plans and specifications consistent with the city’s design standards, responding to construction issues, processing requests for information and change orders, managing punchlist walk throughs, and verifying completion of contractual responsibilities. It is anticipated that this position will include significant time outside on construction projects during the construction season. 

Additional responsibilities and opportunities include assisting with project designs, assisting with the preparation of feasibility reports and updating city design standards and specifications.  This position may also be responsible for day-to-day tasks for the engineering department such as capital improvement planning, reviewing applications for new development, mapping updates, tasks associated with meeting NPDES MS4 Permit requirements, and responding to and resolving citizen requests/complaints. The ability to work professionally in a City Hall environment and present a positive demeanor toward property owners, contractors, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders is an important part of this position. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience with construction oversight or management of municipal infrastructure (drinking water systems, sanitary sewer systems, public streets and storm water management systems).
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability and desire to work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Valid driver’s license and able to provide own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated experience with MS office skills including Word and Excel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current MnDOT certifications are preferred.
  • As a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota, or ability to obtain registration within 1-year, additional position duties and responsibilities may be considered.
